The U.S. Open tennis competition is a celebrity-studded event every year. Even more, celebrities are showing up this year as the entire tennis community watches Serena Williams compete in her final tournament before retiring. Stars from Ben Stiller, Bella Hadid, and Queen Latifa to Bill Clinton packed the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens, on the tournament’s first night to watch Serena play. However, viewers at home mistook one particular celebrity spectator for another queen.

The “Inventing Anna” star and LGBTQ+ activist Laverne Cox unintentionally rose to the top of Twitter’s hot topics. The hair was tied in a low ponytail and was accessorized with hoop earrings and a black face mask. One Twitter user tagged a video of the celebrity with “#Beyonce at the #USOpen” after spotting her in the audience.

Laverne Cox is known for her exemplary role in the popular Netflix series Orange is the New Black.

Fans quickly asserted that it was actress and Emmy winner Laverne Cox, not Queen Bey. Cox, who was flattered, thanked the mistaken identity on Instagram. She even shared the video again.

Laverne Cox’s Reaction To The Confusion

Cox, for her part, accepted the error with grace and uploaded the video on her Instagram account. Not me getting confused for @Beyonce at the #USOpen tonight, then trending on Twitter while the internet laughs over the faux pas. These tweets are hilarious. Before expressing her continued support for Serena, the author stated in the post, “Enjoy!!!

Cox has already acknowledged that she is a tremendous fan of the musician. She released a video of herself preparing for the U.S. Open with Bey playing in the background hours before the match. In a memorable Lip Sync Battle performance, Cox also portrayed Beyoncé.

The user who published the popular tweet clarified his misunderstanding. He apologized, saying, “I guarantee I wasn’t trying to be funny. My bad.” I mistook @Lavernecox for #Beyoncé because I was excited to see her.

Serena wins her first-round match after the evening, but Twitter was already focused on the confusion between the stars.

Beyoncé hasn’t addressed the confusion directly, but she honored Serena’s legacy by narrating the Gatorade short video Love Means Everything, unveiled on August 29 in advance of the tennis legend’s first-round match. The movie highlights significant events in Serena’s career that helped break down barriers for Black women and other women of color in a sport that hasn’t traditionally been available to middle-class or lower-class individuals.
