American Journalist, novelist, and television personality Lisa J. Ling works in these fields. She presently serves as the host of the CNN show This Is Life with Lisa Ling. 

She previously held the positions of the reporter for Channel One News, co-host for The View on ABC from 1999 to 2002, host of National Geographic Explorer from 2003 to 2010, and special correspondent for The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Sacramento, California, is where Ling was born. Her mother, Mary Mei-yan, is a Taiwanese immigrant from Tainan, Taiwan, who oversaw the Formosan Association for Public Affairs Los Angeles branch. 

Chinese immigrant Chung Teh “Douglas” Ling, Ling’s father, was born in Hong Kong in 1937. 

Her paternal grandmother was born in present-day Malaysia on Labuan.

One of the first Chinese students permitted to study in the United States in the 1930s was her paternal grandfather, a native of Guangzhou, Guangdong.

Her grandfather graduated from New York University and the University of Colorado with degrees in business administration. He needed help getting a job in the U.S. 

He relocated to California and eventually launched Folsom’s first Chinese restaurant.

When Ling was seven years old, her parents separated. After the divorce, she and her sister Laura were reared by their father in Carmichael, close to Sacramento.

Ling looked up to reporter Connie Chung and wanted to work on the field.

Ling attended Del Campo High School in Fair Oaks, California, where she earned her diploma in 1991. She went to school in Los Angeles at the University of Southern California.

Through shared friends, Florida businessman Philip Levine and Ling first crossed paths in 2004. They began dating, and they were engaged on February 18, 2005. 

She ended the relationship in October of the same year, telling People Magazine that their busy schedules, particularly the frequent international travel necessary by her employment, were the primary cause.

She declared her engagement to radiation oncologist Paul Song on January 3, 2007.

On May 26, 2007, they got hitched in Los Angeles, California. Connie Chung, one of Lisa’s heroes, and the actor’s Kelly Hu and Diane Farr were at the bridal party.

On March 8, 2013, Ling gave birth to a girl named Jett Ling Song, her first child.

On June 6, 2016, she gave birth to a second child, a daughter named Ray Ling Song. California’s Santa Monica is home to the family.

Laura Ling, her younger sister, and a fellow Journalist, served as host and managing editor of Vanguard at Current TV and a reporter and host on the E! Network. 

Due to their unauthorized entry into the country in March 2009, North Korea imprisoned Laura and her colleague Euna Lee. They had been attempting to capture footage of refugees at the Chinese border.

They were given a 12-year prison sentence in a labor camp in June for breaking entering North Korea without authorization and performing other hostile acts. 

On August 4, 2009, North Korea freed Laura and Euna following a visit from former American President Bill Clinton. The book Somewhere Inside: One Sister’s Captivity in North Korea and the Other’s Fight to Bring Her Home, written by Lisa and Laura Ling, was later released in May 2010.
